Fire Extinguisher Regulation Updates – What You Need to Know

New fire extinguisher regulations came into effect on 4th July 2024, and it’s important for all organisations and businesses to review their current equipment to ensure compliance and avoid potential risks.

These changes centre around the removal of ‘forever chemicals’ – such as PFOA and PFOS – from active firefighting equipment.

If you’re using AFFF (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam) extinguishers, you may need to take action.

What’s changed?

The new regulations prohibit the use of firefighting foams that contain PFOA and PFOS, two persistent substances that fall under the broader category of PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). These chemicals are being phased out due to their long-term environmental impact and potential health concerns.

If these substances are found in your current fire extinguishers, they must be safely decommissioned and replaced as soon as possible.

Why it matters

Failing to comply with the new rules could result in:

  • Fines or legal action

  • Invalidated insurance coverage

  • Increased environmental risk

It’s not just about regulation – it’s about responsibility and keeping your people and property protected.

What you need to do

  1. Review your current extinguishers – Pay particular attention to AFFF models, and check if they contain PFOA or PFOS.

  2. Replace any non-compliant units – Upgrade to extinguishers that meet the latest standards, such as fluorine-free foam options.

  3. Seek expert advice – If you’re unsure about what you have or what you need, we’re here to help.
